THE BATAWA - CARLETON INITIATIVE

Carleton University and the Batawa Development Corporation have formed a
unique partnership that will help the Ontario village create a model
sustainable community for the world. The project is a living laboratory,
giving students an invaluable opportunity to help solve real-world challenges
and take the classroom to the community.

Twenty-seven architectural and industrial design students spent the summer
developing new designs and plans for the old shoe factory and surrounding
village.More projects are planned for the Fall of 2009, including research on
new housing structures.

It is expected that students from other disciplines, such as science, business,
engineering and public policy, will eventually be involved.
